If you ask the people around you, they’re usually split into 2 camps: The self-conscious “don’t forget your socks” group and the sartorially forward “Croc sandal men think I’m gay” group. I belong to neither. In fact, there’s so much venom for the latter that the former even has a facebook group dedicated to their cause.

While I consider myself an aficionado for a fine looking pair of shoes (and according to the girlfriend, an “avid collector”), I hardly feel like a fashion maven. Truth is, when it comes to style stories, I’d rather leave them in the hands of my betters like fellow editors Jeremy Gopalan or Janie Cai.

I do enjoy however a nice pair of loafers. Available in luxurious suede or oh-so-supple leather, to me, loafers while worn sockless are the ultimate expression of dandyism. It conveys an effortless sense of devil-may-care, a touch of sartorial sensitivity and paired with blazer and pocket square, an instantly head turning casual yet luxuriously formal look. A contradiction of terms perhaps, but a look at wealthy Californian tycoon-yacht captains will tell you that I’m right.

Here’s the best part, poor person like myself don’t have to be rich to afford that $1000 look. A pair like the ones you see before you? lolz

5 Simple Loafer Wearing Rules

  1. It’s meant to convey an upscale look. No t-shirt and jeans unless paired with afore mentioned blazer and pocket handkerchief.
  2. It’s always great with khaki or Bermudas.
  3. When wearing pants and if you absolutely insist on wearing socks, make them black socks. I prefer no socks with pant cuffs rolled up.
  4. When paired with shorts and Bermudas, NO SOCKS ever. Period.
  5. Always, ALWAYS care for your loafers
