From their humble beginnings, shorts have now entered the style arena with force.
Traditionally associated with schoolboys during the first half of the 20th century, shorts only became acceptable for men in certain outdoor or athletic activities from the 1930s onwards. As the decades wore on, shorts morphed from being super short and tight (70s basketball stars) to long and baggy (skater boys). Fast-forward to this century and shorts have built up some serious style cred over the past few years, becoming a staple in well-dressed men’s summer wardrobes. Printed, subtly pleated or on the slender side, paired with the perfect T-shirt or a casual blazer, the shorts of this season have similar tailoring to their longer counterparts.
We probably have to thank designer Thom Browne for getting this sartorial ball rolling. Known for impeccably cut yet shrunken silhouettes, his trouser hems not only have been creeping up and up each season, but he also has wholly advocated the suit jacket with shorts. Legions of stylish men around the world quickly adopted the Thom Browne aesthetic, proving in the process that bare legs could look supremely stylish.
So for S/S 2011, you’ll find a huge variety of shorts with and without a matching blazer. Raf Simons for Jil Sander went for a shorter length and colour-blocking to much acclaim, while 3.1 Phillip Lim tackled leather shorts for men elegantly. More neutral trouser shorts were also seen on the catwalks at Bottega Veneta, Dries van Noten and Prada, to name a few. It may have taken nearly a hundred years, but lucky for you, shorts are finally hitting their stride style-wise.
